Pioneering a carbon-neutral era

Global energy transition

The global energy transition is one of the key challenges of the 21st century in order to cope with the climate change. Globally, the use of energy represents by far the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities.

At the same time, energy is the key foundation for economic and social development. Clean technologies in the power sector and across a range of end-uses have therefore become the first choice. In this "new" energy economy, the huge market opportunity for clean technology becomes a major area for investment and international competition.

The situation

Climate change

The climate targets adopted in Paris envisage climate neutrality by 2050. However, at current emissions levels, the global carbon budget for 1.5°C will likely be exceeded in this decade. Yet, efforts to slow climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions run into a central task:

  • Emissions from some of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere are the hardest to abate.
  • This affects the transportation sectors like aviation, shipping and heavy industries like steel, cement/concrete, and chemicals manufacturing.
  • Transitioning these industries to climate-neutral energy sources has to be started now and requires applicable solutions.

The challenge

Green energy availability

Clean technologies in the power sector and across a range of end-uses have therefore become the first choice. The shift to renewable energies faces a number of challenges. This requires in particular:

  • Large amounts of green energy sources, also at locations with underdeveloped grid infrastructure
  • Dealing with generally intermittent supply of green energy in the context of continuous (load-unflexible) industrial processes
  • Bridging geographical distances between locations of efficient green energy production and locations of high energy demand
  • Interdisciplinary, innovative and decentralized solution concepts

One solution

Technology integration

A well designed interplay of different components of sustainable energy production as well as its storage and transport can provide solutions to the challenges of energy transition:

  • Battery storage systems for grid stabilization and load leveling
  • Conversion of electricity into exportable chemical molecules such as hydrogen and hydrocarbons in different chain length and other "carbon-free products", such as ammonia
  • Use of load-flexible technologies for the production of hydrogen and its derivatives

Our contribution

Approach

Project developer and system integrator

With its broad experience, FERROSTAAL is able to focus on selected technologies and niche products, to develop and intensify cooperations with medium-sized international technology partners and to develop sustainable cooperation models for offtake and processing. FERROSTAAL brings its decades of experience in conventional plant construction as a project developer, system integrator, EPC contractor and project manager to the development and implementation of future decarbonization projects.

Based on this experience, FERROSTAAL transforms the innovative individual technological solutions required for a global energy transition into technically and commercially viable plant construction projects. FERROSTAAL thus combines the unchanged high demands on plant construction projects with the technology-focused and usually young but future-oriented technology owners. This applies both to the storage of electrical power through innovative storage solutions (BESS) and to molecular storage (PtX). FERROSTAAL works closely with leading technology owners in specific countries - in some cases exclusively.

Based on a detailed analysis of the challenge, FERROSTAAL develops techno-economically feasible solution concepts and creates a sound basis for strategic decision-making processes on the respective decarbonization programmes and the technologies to be used, on the basis of which FERROSTAAL can take on the tasks of the owner engineer, the EPCM or the EPC, depending on the circumstances. Always meeting the highest requirements for modern quality and project management according to international standards.

FERROSTAAL creates feasibility studies as comprehensive assessments of project viabilities. These studies delve into the content, evaluating factors such as market analysis, technical feasibility, and regulatory compliance. They also consider the scope, determining the project's objectives, deliverables, and potential risks.

The depth of the feasibility study involves a thorough analysis of all relevant factors, including financial projections, resource requirements, and operational considerations. Finally, the study culminates in a pre-feed and cost estimate, providing a preliminary understanding of the project's investment requirements and potential returns, laying the foundation for informed decision-making.

FERROSTAAL identifies in close cooperation with the project owner the ideal technology for the project within the domains of battery energy storage, electrolysis and and Power-to-Liquid (PtL).

With the deep understanding of these cutting-edge fields and partnering with technology leaders FERROSTAAL possess the expertise to assess project requirements and select the most suitable solutions.

FERROSTAAL's portfolio of services includes the initial project definition, feasibility studies and all the way to the selection of suitable partners, technologies, including potential involvement in project partnerships and financial structuring.

As Owners Engineer, EPCM or EPC provider, FERROSTAAL ensures that complex projects are completed in time and budget and quality. The long lasting country know-how in our focus markets complements Ferrostaal's competence in the local realisation of projects.

Pioneering PtL-plant

FERROSTAAL is supporting INERATEC as Owners Engineer in the implementation of the first and largest industrial-scale Power-to-Liquid (PtL) plant with a capacity of up to 10 megawatts as the developer and overall project manager. The pioneering plant in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, will produce up to 3,500 tonnes of Fischer-Tropsch crude oil annually from green hydrogen and up to 10,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 and renewable electricity for further processing into 4.6 million litres of e-fuels. With the Industriepark Höchst in Frankfurt, the site has access to low-cost renewable hydrogen (H2) and a biogas plant as a CO2-source.

Germany, Frankfurt am Main – Power-to-Liquid-Plant

The pioneering plant produces a wide range of sustainable fuels such as e-kerosene, e-diesel and wax. The clean diesel has drop-in quality and can be used directly in cars and trucks. The naphtha and wax fraction can be further refined into CO2-neutral e-fuels as well as synthetic chemicals.

This pioneering plant introduces a highly innovative technology for the Power-to-Liquid (PtL) unit as a future standard product for industrial applications. Larger capacities will be achieved in further projects, by upscaling and upnumbering the modules. With this first-time application on an industrial scale, the PtL unit will serve as a pioneer for numerous other projects worldwide.

Chile – BESS Project

FERROSTAAL conducts a case study with a Chilean partner that manages 4 GW of wind and solar capacity. The evaluation focuses on the use of innovative BESS technology to optimize the dispatch of the partner's renewable energy generators. The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) plays a critical role in ensuring a constant supply of electricity by effectively mitigating the need to curtail renewable energy, thereby maximizing revenues.
